When interviewed on cross-Strait relations by Chinese media, Foreign Affairs Secretary of Papua New Guinea Elias Wohengu said, in October 2023 Prime Minister James Marape of PNG paid a successful official visit to China and attended the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. In the Joint Statement of the visit Papua New Guinea has reaffirmed its longstanding traditional commitment to the one-China policy, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, that it opposes “Taiwan independence”, and that it supports all efforts made by the Government of the People's Republic of China to realize reunification.
