Ambassador Li Ruiyou Attends the Official Launching of the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone Project

Mr. Li Ruiyou, Ambassador of China to Papua New Guinea (PNG), was invited to witness the official launching of the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone Project (PMIZ) on November 24th at the Vidar PMIZ Project Site, Madang Province. Several Hundreds of people attended the launching ceremony, including VIP guests Prime Minister Hon. Peter O'Neill, Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry Hon. Richard Maru, Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources Hon. Mao Zeming, Minister for Public Enterprise and State Investment Hon. Ben Micah, Minister for Petroleum and Energy Hon. Nixon Duban, Minister for Works and Implementation Hon. Francis Awesa, Governor for Madang Province Hon. Jim Kas, local MPs, community leaders, students and citizens. The Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Embassy Mr. Cai Shuizeng and President of China Shenyang International Corporation Limited Ms. Tang Lezhen also attended the event.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill Made His Remarks

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said in his remarks that, PNG is blessed with a lot of natural resources, it was losing to countries which lacked these resources but were value adding and making a killing from them. He said the PNG Government is determined to put a stop to this and this project was one way to do so. It was the Government's aim to beat other countries as the largest tuna processing and canning hub in the Asia-Pacific region. He said the project is not just to make profit but to create 30,000 jobs for PNG people. He expressed his thanks to the Chinese Government for providing concessional loan for this project.

Ambassador Li Ruiyou Made His Remarks

Ambassador Li expressed his sincere congratulations to the official launching of the PMIZ. He said in his remarks that PNG is blessed with abundant fish resources and the PNG Government has wisely adopted the policy for making added value to fishery industry. Therefore, this PMIZ project is coming in the right place at the right time. He said, once completed, the project is to enable PNG to be developed into a major regional marine industrial hub for on-shore tuna processing, it will help further unleash the fisheries potential for PNG's economic and social development, as it will create substantial revenue for PNG. Li said PMIZ is contracted for construction to China Shenyang International Corporation and funded by concessional loan from China EXIM bank, this is another milestone of pragmatic cooperation between Papua New and China. The Ambassador encouraged China Shenyang International to come out with a best quality project on time through close collaboration with the PNG Government, the Madang Provincial Government and people. Li also briefed the audience on China's current economic development and the extension plan of the south line of the Maritime Silk Road. He said, with China's continuous economic and social progress, PNG and China will enjoy a lot more social and economic exchanges and cooperation.
