Chinese Navy Hospital Ship Ark Peace Successfully visited Papua New Guinea

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) hospital ship ARK PEACE paid a goodwill visit to Papua New Guinea and carried out humanitarian medical service in Port Moresby from 11 to 18 September 2014. Ark Peace medical personnel worked together with the PNG Defence Force medical staff and provided free medical services to Papua New Guineans.

A welcome ceremony was held at the main wharf in the morning of 11 September. Hon. Michael Malabag, PNG Minister for Health, Chief of staff Colonel Mark Goina, PNG Defence Force, Chinese Ambassador H.E. Li Ruiyou, staff of the Chinese Embassy, representatives from Chinese companies and Chinese communities in Port Moresby attended the ceremony.

Hon. Michael Malabag made welcome remarks on behalf of the PNG government. He said PNG was delighted to have the hospital ship visit which will strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, especially in the area of health.

The officers and men of the ship were welcomed also by PNG traditional dance and Chinese lion dance.

In the evening of 14 September, the Mission Commander of the Ark Peace hosted a reception onboard. About 120 guests and friends from PNG political, economic, cultural and other sectors, as well as representatives from the Diplomatic Corps, international organizations, Chinese companies and the local Chinese communities attended the reception. The VIP guests included the Governor General Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio and Lady Esmie Ogio, Minister for Defence Hon. Fabian Pok, Minister for Sports and Pacific Games Hon. Justin Tkatchenko and Minister for Finance Hon. James Marape.

In his speech the Mission Commander Rear Admiral Shen Hao pointed out that the Ark Peace, fully loaded with the friendship of the Chinese people and in the spirit of international humanitarianism, is here for spreading friendship, care and love. During these days, the ship’s crew have already felt the enthusiasm and friendship of the PNG people and the brotherly affection of the PNG counterparts. He noted that the cordial military cooperative relations between China and PNG is not only in the interests of our two peoples, but also conducive to the peace, stability and development of the South Pacific Region. With a purpose of maintaining world peace and promoting common development, the Chinese Navy is looking forward to cooperating with the navies of other countries in an effort to build a harmonious world and a harmonious ocean.

Minister Fabian Pok extended his warm welcome to Ark Peace and sincere thanks to the Chinese Government and people for providing funding for rehabilitation work of PNGDF infrastructure and training for PNGDF military staff. He said PNG Government had been strongly upholding the One China Policy since its independence, and he believes the visit of Ark Peace will elevate the overall relations of the two countries to a higher level.

Ambassador Li Ruiyou said in his speech that the hospital ship, designed and manufactured by the Chinese themselves, is now sailing all over the world carrying out humanitarian medical services and fulfilling China’s international obligations. This makes the Chinese people feel very proud. Li noted that the name the ship matched China’s foreign policy of peacefully coexisting and building a harmonious world. It also manifested the Chinese people’s expectations towards world peace and development. Li also expressed his appreciation to PNG Government, the Department of Defence, PNGDF, Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Health, Chinese companies and local Chinese communities for their efforts in the preparation for and assisting the ship’s visiting activities.

In the morning of 15 September, the Governor General, H.E. Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio and Lady Esmie Ogio visited the ship. The Governor General expressed his appreciation of the Chinese medical services to Papua New Guineans. He said the Chinese Navy brings health, peace and love to the PNG people and he believes PNG-China relations will be further enhanced by this visit.

In the afternoon of 17 September, Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neil toured the ship and expressed his thanks to the Chinese Government for providing such medical services. He hoped that the hospital ship will visit PNG again.

During its stay in Port Moresby, the Ark Peace hospital ship provided outpatient services for 4,591 persons, auxiliary examination such as CT and DR for 2,391 persons, and successfully carried out 47 operations.

The hospital ship left Port Moresby for China in the morning of 18 September 2014.
